Tuesday June 7/Day 3: Galway

After the really long day Sunday/Monday, we slept in a bit and started out late.

Breakfast at our AirBnB. The house manager left us soda bread and other tasty pastries. Fresh milk in fridge, cereal and tea – we were all set!

We drove to Galway … it was mostly freeway, so I was a lot more comfortable. But still, the roundabouts! In many places, we are driving at 100-120 kmh and suddenly there was a roundabout. Very interesting choice for traffic control.

We had lunch at an Italian restaurant (Greg’s choice). I had fresh Galway Bay mussels, which were delicious. Greg had pizza and Charles, pasta. And a local beer, of course.

Took a tour bus around the city. We learned a lot but unfortunately, it was a prerecorded, scripted talk. I do prefer the more (seemingly) spontaneous “lectures.” I didn’t take many pictures of the city proper, but the buildings were so close together and the streets very narrow. At one point, I was sure I could touch the building next to the bus. And there were no skyscrapers, which made it feel much less city like.

After the tour, we walked around, did a bit of shopping, and had a pint in a beautiful pub.

I thought a lot about my dad today. I think he would have really enjoyed the mussels! And I almost burst into tears when we crossed over the river and the tour guide pointed out the fly fishermen. Love you and miss you, dad.

It stays light here until 10 pm! We ate supper at an Irish fast food restaurant (“Supermacs”)…one order of fries would have been enough for all three of us. We headed over to another pub for a bit. This one was really for the locals…it was super quiet. We walked around the local ruins on the way back to the Airbnb.

Tomorrow we are taking a ferry to the Aran Islands and will rent bicycles. The ferry passes under the Cliffs of Moher on the way back. We will have a long drive to the next hotel, so I may not post tomorrow.
